The Cleveland Bay Horse Society
of North America started their Performance
Award Scheme in 1993, loosely modeled after the British PA
Scheme. The intent has always been to acknowledge and honor those folks
with Cleveland Bay horses, both purebred and part bred, who are out
competing and thus promoting the breed.
The
original scheme covered the disciplines of dressage, hunters, jumpers,
driving, and eventing. The main Performance Award has always been
multi-discipline, with shows being placed into differing categories
based on their degree of difficulty.
Over
the last decade, additional “special”
performance-based awards have been introduced. Each year, the CBHSNA
offers the Thomas
Webster Memorial Trophy to the high-point purebred Cleveland
Bay. For the following special awards, both pure and part
bred PA-enrolled Cleveland Bays are eligible.
2003
brought about the 'Apple
Of My Eye' award, dona ted by Timberlake Farm, and given to
the Performance Award high scoring mare. 2004 saw the
addition of the "Forbes Award" sponsored by Wendy Forbes for high point
gelding. In 2005, the “You Go,
Girls” award was added for high point mare owned and
exhibited by a woman. This award is also sponsored by
Timberlake Farm.
From
the beginning CBHSNA has also offered to the dressage riders amongst
the membership 'All Breed Awards' through the United States Dressage
Federation (USDF).

The
current Performance Awards are now broken out into various disciplines,
and there is a separate category for versatility. In 2003, Distance
Riding and Western disciplines were added to make the program more
inclusive and further showcase the versatility of the breed.
